History

Granly is the oldest curative education home in Norway.
Solveig Nagell Hellstrom (born 1902) bought a house in 1938 where she started working with three handicapped children. She had received an education in art and curative education in Germany and Switzerland. After she worked for several years in homes in Sweden and Iceland, she decided to bring the impulse of curative education to Norway.
Solveig Nagell was deeply convinced that extremely handicapped children also were capable of development. With this conviction she taught the slowly growing group of children and gave them nourishment for head, heart and hand.

Money was scarcely available. Solveig Nagell led the house for the first twelve years without financial public support. Building, expansion and daily life of the home were only possible because of the help of private gifts.
From 1950 on, a small inflow of financial public support began.
Up to 37 handicapped people have lived together at Granly. A strong pioneering spirit and great devotion have driven Solveig Nagell during the first 21 years of Granly.

Some of the people that came to stay with Solveig Nagell in the 1940’s still live at Granly today. Here they have found a home for life.
